Solar for agriculture

Your busiest hours are daylight hours.

Milking, cooling, drying and washing all run when the sun is up — exactly when your panels generate most. With TAMS behind it, farm solar is one of the soundest investments on the yard.

What the farm grant covers

TAMS, in plain figures.

The Solar Capital Investment Scheme (TAMS) is ring-fenced for solar — a separate ceiling from your other TAMS items.

Why farms choose CTS

  • Sized to daytime loads

Milking, cooling and washing are exactly what solar does best.

  • Planning-exempt in most cases

Rooftop solar on farm buildings is generally exempt — we check at survey.

  • Grants handled start to finish

Questions

Farm solar — straight answers

What grant can a farm get for solar?

The Solar Capital Investment Scheme (TAMS) pays 60% on up to €90,000 of solar — a ring-fenced ceiling, separate from your other TAMS items — so up to €54,000 back. Enhanced rates may apply for qualifying young or woman farmers; we confirm your rate at survey.

How fast does farm solar pay back?

Farms with big daytime loads and a TAMS grant are often among the fastest paybacks — typically a few years, depending on usage. Panels are warrantied for decades beyond that, so the rest is profit.

Do I need planning permission for solar on farm buildings?

In most cases, no. Since 2022, rooftop solar on farm buildings is exempt from planning permission, with limited exceptions. We check this for you at survey.

Will it work for milking and cooling loads?

Yes — those are daytime loads, exactly when panels generate most. We size the system to your parlour, tanks and dryers so you use as much of your own generation as possible.

Can I sell surplus power back to the grid?

Yes. The Clean Export Guarantee pays roughly 15–25c per kWh for electricity you export, and the first €400 a year is tax-free. We set up the export registration with your supplier.
